Roam Ready: Spring Summer

As the longer days return, something shifts. Routes resurface in the mind. Getting roam-ready for spring and summer is less about reinvention and more about readiness. A considered check-in with the campervan and the gear. Done well, it becomes less of a task and more of a ritual.
The campervan
Before routes are planned or campsites booked, open the doors and let the campervan breathe. Winter storage is rarely kind to the details. Batteries deplete slowly in the cold. Seals stiffen. Work through the fundamentals - tyre pressure, fluid levels, exterior fittings, any seals that face the weather. Systems that have sat dormant for months need a moment of gentle attention. What matters is that it is done with intention, not hurried through on the morning of departure. This is maintenance as ritual. The season begins here.
Refresh your electrical systems
Longer days invite longer stays off-grid. Check that solar panels are clean and unobstructed, that batteries are holding and charging correctly, and that control systems are responding as expected. Test lights, sockets and USB ports before you need them rather than when you do. If extended or remote travel is on the horizon this season, now is a natural moment to ask whether the current setup still serves you - or whether a quiet upgrade would change the experience of weeks on the road.
Check the water systems
With warmer weather comes increased water use - more cooking outside, more showers, more days spent parked in one place. Flush fresh water tanks, clean filters and check pumps for consistent flow. Grey water systems deserve equal attention; anything left sitting through winter becomes considerably more noticeable once the temperature rises. If the campervan was winterised before storage, ensure any bypasses are fully reset and every system is operational before the first departure. Find out now, not somewhere scenic and inconvenient.
Revisit cooking setups
Spring and summer often shift cooking outdoors, and cooking systems play a central role. Check bottle levels, connections and shut-off valves. Test appliances well ahead of travel. If you rely on gas for hot water, consistency matters as much as capacity. This is also a good moment to consider the smaller details that change daily life more than expected. A proper wind shield for the stove. A table that sets up without negotiation. Thinkn of the things that make cooking outside feel effortless.
Travel Lighter
Winter gear has a way of accumulating quietly - heavy layers, surplus equipment, bedding designed for cold that has no place in July. Swap it out. Carry what the season actually asks for. Weight affects fuel efficiency, handling and the general feeling of a trip in ways that are difficult to quantify but easy to sense. Traveling lighter tends, in every sense, to feel lighter.
Consider the heat
Comfort in summer is rarely a question of cooling systems alone. It is about airflow, shade and understanding how the campervan responds to sustained warmth. Test roof vents, windows and fans. Check that insect screens are intact and easy to deploy. Notice where direct sun falls at different times of day and whether the way you park - and which direction you park in - might change things considerably. Good summer travel is often found in the small, considered details rather than the dramatic interventions.
Ask what this season asks of you
Each season invites a slightly different kind of travel. Spring and summer tend toward slower mornings, longer stays, spontaneous detours and the kind of days that resist scheduling. Take a moment to consider whether your setup still reflects how you actually want to move. Reorganising storage, adjusting the layout, refining a system that has always been almost right - small changes made before departure tend to pay back quietly across every day of the season.
To be roam-ready is not to anticipate every scenario or prepare for every outcome. It is simply to trust that the campervan supports you - quietly, reliably, without demanding attention. When the systems are sound, the weight is considered and the season has been met with a little intention, roaming feels natural. And with that, it begins.
